PREAUTHORIZATION BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CENTER FOR ACUTE INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND EPIDEMIOLOGY ((401) 222-2577) IS REQUIRED PRIOR TO SPECIMEN SUBMISSION

NORO VIRUS TESTING IS FOR OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION ONLY. ALL SPECIMENS ARE REQUIRED TO RECEIVE APPROVAL PRIOR TO SENDING

Specimen

Preferred Specimen: Minimum 2 ml of stool in a clean vial without preservative. Specimens in Cary-Blair collection vials also acceptable.

CLIA regulations require two patient identifiers on the specimen container and the test requisition.

Form Required Rhode Island State Health Laboratories (RISHL) test requisition form
Test Request Write "NORO" in comment field on requisition form
Transport Transport within 24 hours of collection. Hold at 2 - 8 C until transport. Transport maintaining refrigerated temperature conditions by surrounding specimen with blue or wet ice.
Normal Value Negative for Norovirus
Turnaround Time 24 hours to 2 business days
Kit Kits may be obtained Monday - Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm from the RI State Health Laboratories Center for Laboratory Support Services
