WIC Farmers' Market Program
WIC provides checks to qualifying clients to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at local WIC approved Farmers’ Markets. The Farmers' Market checks are valid for one season, from June 1 through October 31.
- In 2014; 47,092 farmers’ market checks totaling $235,460 were issued to eligible participants and 18,303 were redeemed, totaling $91,501.
- Expanded 'Pop-Up Markets' to three WIC clinics and one community center. This was responsible for the redemtion of an additional 853 farmers' market checks totalling $4,265. These markets helped increase access to healthy local produce for families across Rhode Island and offered opportunity for local famers to reach new customers.
- Increased the overall state Farmers' Market program redemption from 36.8% in 2013 to 38.8% in 2014.
- Coordinated 'Fun at the Farm' events at local farmers' markets, providing hands-on activities for learning to prepare and taste locally grown fruits and vegetables.
