West Nile Virus

Arbovirus Surveillance Rhode Island, 2008

The 2008 surveillance season runs from June 1 - October 31, 2008.

Arbovirus = arthropod-borne virus
WNV = West Nile Virus
EEE = Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Surveillance methodology for the 2008 season was conducted in the same manner previous years.

Routine collection and testing of mosquitoes for WNV and EEE virus was done from June through early October.  The Rhode Island State Laboratory performs testing for WNV and EEE virus infection in human specimens year-round.

Mosquito Pools (Pool = group of mosquitoes):
Ten (10) pools of mosquitoes tested positive for WNV in Rhode Island. No pools of mosquitoes tested positive for EEE in Rhode Island.

Humans:
One case of West Nile meningo-encephalitis was reported in 2008. The patient was a 60 year old female from Providence County with immunocompromising conditions. She become ill in mid September and since recovered from the illness.

No human cases of EEE were identified in Rhode Island.

Equine:
No horses were test for West Nile Virus or EEE.
