Addressing Tobacco in Managed Care - Capstone Conference Paper - This paper discusses changes in policy and in health care systems that have proven effective in reducing tobacco use, highlighting strategies and tactics that have proven successful, and it discusses how the experience of eight years can inform future work to sustain and spread the gains achieved—both to the field of tobacco use cessation and, potentially, to the management of other behavioral risk factors (e.g., physical inactivity, diet, risky drinking, obesity) associated with chronic conditions and diseases.

Population Impact of Clinician Efforts to Reduce Tobacco Use - A large fraction of U.S. smokers visit a physician each year, creating an opportunity to alter their smoking behavior.
This chapter examines

  1. the proportion of U.S. smokers who are receiving recommended tobacco interventions during routine health care visits;
  2. whether clinician intervention rates are increasing over time; and
  3. what effect physician advice is having on cessation activity and success.

We use Current Population Survey (CPS) data and meta-analyses on the efficacy of clinician interventions to estimate the number of smokers in the United States who quit each year as a direct result of current clinician counseling practices and also to determine what might be achieved through improved practice patterns.
