Tobacco Control Program

Resource Center

The RI Tobacco Control Network's Tobacco Control Resource Center is maintained by:

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.  You can stop in any time during those hours, but please call ahead to make sure someone is there. If it is your first visit, please call and set up an appointment with Molly Clark so that you can have an introductory tour.  The Center is open to anyone concerned about tobacco use.  Materials such as pamphlets, bookmarks, signs, buttons, stickers, posters, etc. are available in reasonable quantities at no charge for organizations, schools, doctors’ offices, student projects, etc.  All materials, whether given or on loan, must be signed out in the log book.

The Resource Center has pamphlets on a variety of subjects, including:

  • Secondhand Smoke
  • Smoking Cessation (for adults, college age, and teens)
    (including dealing with stress and weight gain concerns, and helping someone else quit)
  • Effects of Tobacco Use on the Body
  • General information about tobacco for all age levels from coloring books to materials for adults
  • Tobacco Advertising and targeting of youth, women, and other populations
  • Advocacy for Tobacco Control     
  • Activity workbooks for various ages
  • Smoking and Women, including Smoking and Pregnancy
  • Alternative forms of tobacco (cigars, pipes, hookahs, bidis, spit tobacco, etc.)
  • Other things people smoke, such as marijuana
    The Center also has posters, stickers, bookmarks, buttons, signs, etc.

There is a lending library of videos, CD-ROMs, and DVDs, as well as various audiovisual aids such as flip charts, models of diseased lungs, exhibit boards about tobacco and about secondhand smoke, etc. 

There is a reference library of books, government reports, magazines, samples of curricula and materials, electronic copies of articles, etc. (Reference library materials must be used in-house, they are not circulated)

Speakers and technical assistance on any tobacco or lung health-related subject are also available through the RI Tobacco Control Network and the American Lung Association of Rhode Island.

News

New Tobacco Control Law

On June 22, 2009 the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was signed into law giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) some regulatory power over tobacco products. Some aspects of the law took effect immediately while others will be phased in over the next 42 months (see timetable)
