Protecting Rhode Islanders from Secondhand Smoke.
The Rhode Island “Public Health and Workplace Safety Law” took effect on March 1, 2005. This law protects Rhode Islanders at work and in public places from the effects of secondhand smoke. The law ensures a smoke-free environment for business owners, employees, and the public. Rhode Islanders now reap the health and economic benefits of being smoke-free. Restaurants and bars in Rhode Island are significantly less polluted than they were before implementation of the statewide smoke-free workplace law. Since the law, indoor levels of air pollution have improved considerably in Rhode Island. The pre and post smokefree law air quality tests demonstrate that workers and patrons are protected from harmful levels of a known carcinogen and toxin.
