Hate Crimes

Hate crimes constitute any crime that is committed against someone because of their membership in a particular group, based on their race or ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or ability. There were 34 hate crimes reported in 2009 in the state of Rhode Island. Twenty-one percent of these were categorized as destruction, damage, or vandalism-related, with 35% involving assault, and 1 case of arson.
